Region of Murcia, Not Typical



Located in south-east of Spain the region of Murcia has inherited the majesty of its ancestors. This is a place full of contrasts where the sun shines 360 days a year and the distances do not exist.


Good temperatures and many hours of light rule the daily future of their picturesque villages, its festivals and natural areas. The benefits of its unique climate and geophysical characteristics become this land into a meeting place between leisure and culture, sun and beach, health and beauty. The religion, legend and history live together here.


Cartagena, Caravaca ...

 

“Cartagena Puerto de Culturas”, “Lorca Taller del Tiempo”, Caravaca de la Cruz and Murcia “Cruce de Caminos” are displayed as four cardinal points from which one can comb largely the monumental and cultural offer of our region. In Cartagena awaits wonders such as the Punic Wall, the Augusteum, the Decumano, the Roman Theatre or the Christmas Fort. Eyewitness of the passage of the centuries this city has experienced periods of peace and war. It has seen how the Carthaginian and Roman Empire fell. It has overcome the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and Modernism too. At the same time in the Valley of Guadalentin awaits the town of Lorca professed as National Historic-Artistic Site. Its old quarter stresses, its cobbled streets and its squares with churches and convents. Above them and full of strength it erects imposing the Fortress of the Sun. It is a magnificent medieval castle full of history that today has become in a major theme area. For its part Caravaca de la Cruz is the religious core of the region. City of Templars it was the border between the Moorish Kingdom of Granada and the Christian one. Located in the Real Alcázar Sanctuary of the Vera Cruz is one of sacred jewel of Christianity: the Holy Vera Cruz. It is shelter of a splinter of wood belonging to the log where Christ was crucified. The Lignum Crucis and the professed devotion of the faithful have made Caravaca one of the five places of the Christendom which has the privilege of celebrating the perpetual Jubilee Year. In 2010 the city celebrates its Holy Year and awaits the arrival of thousands of pilgrims. Stroll about the medieval quarter visiting many churches that support the town or get away to the natural spot of Las Fuentes del Marques become in indispensable references for the tourist.

Capital Murcia, Mountains & more

 

Murcia is the capital of the Region. It is the ideal place to join life on the streets, walks, terraces, “tapas”, museums and galleries. In the city of Salzillo enclosed between the Moneo building, the Episcopal Palace and the Casino rises majestically one of the key pieces of the Spanish Baroque: The Cathedral of Santa Maria, whose crown jewel is the “Capilla de los Vélez”.Beyond the cities the Region of Murcia combines the plains and mountains, desert landscapes with rice fields, lush valleys with steep, narrow alleys of the most genuine people. In the Northeast, a carpet full of vineyards welcomes to the travellers. This is a land of rich history, a story that reminds her through numerous Palaeolithic archaeological sites, Iberians and Romans who are still preserved. Yecla and Jumilla are known for their wines. Its wines with “Denominación de Origen” (Denomination of Origin) evoke a world of emotions as complex and full of nuances as the land of which they arise. Also in the area, Abanilla and Fortuna with more than 2000 years of history stress the wealth of this region.

 

Sports & Activities in Murcia


At the same time the Northwest provides with a great variety of landscapes. Legacy of ancient civilizations enjoys a large Natural Reserve, which ensures its visitors a host of leisure activities and sports. The samples of rock art in the area are considered World Heritage. Bet on the River Segura is based Calasparra known for its rice with “Denominación de Origen” (Denomination of Origin). Join the tasty local cuisine with a fine wine from Bullas and do not stop hiking and walking the Via Verde Road, linking the towns of Mula, Caravaca, Calasparra and Moratalla. The Segura caresses this territory on a route that stays calm to Cieza. Here lovers with strong emotions know the wilder side of river. In addition, this town is Siyâsa Medina one of the most important Islamic sites in Europe.

Further to the South is located the Natural Reserve of Sierra Espuña. It is considered like the green lung of our region. Its geophysical characteristics allow the visitors to practice sport activities such us climbing on the face of Leyva, orientation, trekking or paragliding.

It is also emblematic, but very different the Ricote Valley known for being the last Moorish redoubt in Spain. It has a beautiful orchard of fruit trees and palms that offers endless possibilities from cultural tours to trace the seven municipals that make up the region to the health treatments of the Thermal Archena. Here, visitors can spend a pleasant time while swimming, fishing, sailing canoeing or access to a host of recreational activities in the various river beaches spread over the area.



Mar Menmor and Mediterranean

 

Two seas form our coast: the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean. Mazarrón, Águilas, Cartagena, Mar Menor and La Manga share the beaches along the coast together with fantastic and secluded coves, dreamy landscapes and Natural Parks such as the Regional Park of Las Salinas, Arenales of San Pedro and the Regional Park of Calblanque. In addition our good weather allows the visitors to do aquatic sports in winter and summer. In this sense the “Estación Naútica del Mar Menor” (Sailing Station of the Mar Menor) with more than 20 nautical bases provides with a wide range of activities and services to learn or simply join sailing, skiing, diving, boating, canoeing, kite surfing and windsurfing.
